For this topiary design, I have sprayed a terracotta flower pot with silver paint. I have used a large dri-foam sphere, and, starting from the top, I have pinned on Ivy leaves in rows, each one slightly overlapping, in order to hide the foam. (You could use any other evergreen broad leaves instead of Ivy.) Once the sphere is covered, I have used pearl-headed corsage pins, and stuck them at intervals all around the sphere, as an added decoration. Finally, I have used some silver cord, and pinned it on all round the sphere, finishing off with a bow at the front of the design. The sphere sits neatly into the top of the flower pot, but could be glued on if necessary. The whole thing stands on a shallow silver square base. Two of these, either side of a mantlepiece would look very effective. Smaller or larger spheres could be used to make different sized arrangements. The ivy leaves will dry in situ, and the sphere can be used again and again. Ultimately, the dried leaves may become faded, but a coat of silver or green paint (removing the pearl-headed pins and the siver cord first!) would soon revitalise it. |
