FASCICULARIA BICOLOR
Common Name: None
Family: Bromeliaceae

Fascicularia bicolor is a terrestrial bromeliad which is hardy in my garden in a sheltered position, but elsewhere, may need protection over winter. It needs a well drained position in fairly poor soil. Its leaves are green, until it reaches the stage when the rosette is to flower. Then the leaves turn a spectacular bright red, and can be used in flower arrangements with stunning effect. The flower is an unusual mixture of turquoise blue, pink and yellow. Once the rosette has flowered, it then dies, but by then the plant has produced more rosettes which will flower a year or two later. The leaf margins are sharply toothed, so need to be used with care.
