FLORAL DESIGNS
divider

This design has been made in a square galvanized container, with floral foam for the mechanics. The container has been used with one of the corners facing front. For the height, I have used two Asparagus meyerii stems. Three maroon Leucadendron "Red Sunset" have been used, and at the base, some Fatsia japonica leaves, which have been trimmed to the right scale for the design, and some Galax leaves to fill in. Three beautiful deep maroon Anthuriums with a green spadix and a green flush to the edge (variety not known) pick up the colour of the Leucadendrons, with a group of five peach roses to the left. To the left of the design, I have looped a folded Phormium tenax purpureum leaves, and an upright piece of this folded Phormium is at the back of the design also (see detail below). To bring in the silver colour of the container, I have added some silver Salix matsudana 'tortuosa' (twisted Willow).

DESIGN 76
An overhead view of the design.

On the left is a closeup view of the folded Phormium tenax purpureum. This effect is easy to achieve. Take a long Phormium leaf, and split it in two, taking out the midrib, which is too tough to fold successfully. Staple the two pieces together at right angles, with the upright piece at the front, and the other piece underneath, and sticking out to the right. Take the right-hand piece, and fold it over the upright piece. Turn the whole thing clockwise, and repeat, taking the right-hand piece again, and folding it over the upright piece. Turn the whole thing clockwise again, and repeat all the way up the leaf, until you run out of leaf! To finish off, you can make a small slot in one of the leaves, and thread the other one through it. This is the same principle as you might use when making paper Christmas decorations! Interesting effects can be achieved by using two different Phormium leaves so that you have half of one colour, and half of another. These leaves dry well too, so you can use them another time, perhaps sprayed a different colour.
