I love this shallow pale green dish with a glossy finish, and was looking at ways to use it for flower arranging without hiding it. I decided to make an arrangement which only covers one half of the dish. I have used a plastic saucer with floral foam for the mechanics, and have stuck the saucer to the sloping side of the dish using sticky floral fix (like green putty). Because the saucer is at an angle, stuck to the inside of the dish, the floral foam needs to be cut at an angle also, so that the top surface of the foam is actually level. It also needs to be about 2 - 3 cms above the rim of the container, to allow for plant material which is inserted at an angle, trailing downwards. |
I decided that a crescent shape would be the most appropriate, so that the design follows the edge of the dish. I have used Eucalyptus gunnii (juvenile form), and some red Cornus alba "Elegantissima" twigs for the outline. Some Hedera "Sulphur Heart" leaves help to cover the floral foam. Flowers used were standard Carnations (peach), orange Carthamus tinctoria, orange Lilies (not yet open in the picture) for the focal area, dark brown Echinacea purpurea seedheads, and some red-orange Hypericum berries to add colour and texture. Further stems of the Cornus are looped across the arrangement to add a touch of interest. Below is an overhead view of the arrangement. | |
