This design has been made in a galvanized container, using floral foam for the mechanics. It's a horizontal arrangement with a difference! I left the floral foam sticking up quite high out of the container (about 10.5cms, or 4"), as much of the plant material for this design is pinned directly on to it. I began by pinning some Aucuba japonica 'Crotonifolia' leaves horizontally in layers all around the foam. I left a slight gap between layers so that other things could be inserted or pinned between the layers of leaves. |

Then, I pinned some silver painted Corylus avellana 'Contorta' (Contorted Hazel) and some green painted Salix tortuosa (Twisted Willow) stems horizontally along the top and front of the foam. Next, I inserted some Aspidistra leaves, and some Yucca eliphantipes variegata leaves, again horizontally. I then pinned on some slivers of dried Eucalyptus bark, and inserted some orange-red roses, terracotta coloured Cymbidium orchids, peachy coloured spray carnations, and some Gypsophila "Million Stars", each type of flower in horizontal groups. Finally, I filled in a few gaps with groups of the green berries of Aucuba japonica 'Crotonifolia'. A closeup of the centre part of this arrangement, showing the plant material in horizontal layers, can be seen below. |
