This design has been made in a shallow terracotta bowl, with floral foam for the mechanics. First, I placed some cut stems of Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) horizontally across the foam, and pinned them into position. Next, I pinned some pieces of Eucalyptus bark horizontally onto the foam, following the same direction as the Fennel stems. The bark echoed the colour of the terracotta pot perfectly! The flowers and foliage were then placed in groups in between the bark and Fennel stems. I also added some green wicker balls for added interest and texture, and rolled and stapled some Phormium tenax variegata leaves which had been split in half down the centre, with Reindeer moss inserted in the middle. These gave an extra texture and pattern to the design. (See detailed picture below.) |
Finally, I added some gold wire, with some gold beads threaded onto it at intervals, to add some lustre to the design. Flowers used were bright pink, wavy Celosia cristata (Cockscomb) layered, red Roses, red mini Gerberas, orange Lilies, and deep red Leucanthemum (a type of Protea). Some green Cladonia rangifera (Reindeer Moss) and foliage of Fatshedera lizei and Heuchera 'Stormy Seas' was also used. |
This is a closeup showing how the rolled Phormium leaves create a good pattern and texture within the design. You can also see the gold wire and beads in amongst the flowers. |
