DESIGN 57

Who needs flowers when there's so many lovely foliage plants around? This is an all-foliage design, using foliage from the garden. I have used a galvanized jug, with a container in the top which holds floral foam. The foliage used is a mixture of green, yellow, yellow-variegated, white-variegated, purple, and grey colours. I have used Cordyline australis for the height, and Ligustrum variegata (Privet), Berberis thunbergia purpurea, Phormium 'Platt's Black', Hosta 'June' and 'Patriot', grey Santolina chamaecyparissus (Cotton Lavender), and grey Stachys lanata (Lamb's lugs or bunny ears) to echo the colour of the container, Heuchera 'Chocolate Ruffles', Grisellinia littoralis variegata, Acorus gramineus 'Ogon', yellow Hedera helix 'Buttercup', which has been rolled and wired into bunches, and Glechoma hederaceae 'variegata' trailing on the left hand side. Looped and plaited on the right of the design is Leymus arenarius, a glaucous blue grass which can be invasive, but is so useful to use in arrangements! For added interest, I have used three seed heads of Allium 'Purple splendour'.
