Design 360

(Advanced Class on 6.10.09)

The theme of this design is "Trick or Treat". I've used traditional Hallowe'en colours of orange and black to create the atmosphere. The container is an orange pottery dish, with floral foam for the mechanics. For the height, I've used some black bamboo, Phyllostachys nigra, bound together with gold bullion wire, and arranged vertically in the design. Other foliage used is Cordyline 'Black Magic', curled and stapled on the ends, black Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens', orange coloured Mahonia, Hedera colchica 'Sulphur Heart', Fatshedera lizei 'Anna Mikkels', and Pittosporum tobira variegata. Flowers are orange Gerberas, orange Lilies and deep orange Chrysanthemums. For added interest I've also added some black Hypericum berries, and three small red apples at the front of the design. Some black pebbles also add to the design and repeat the black colours elsewhere. The "treat" part of the title is represented with a cluster of wrapped sweets which have been wired together, whilst the "trick" is represented with a large rubber spider hanging from the top of the design, and a giant rubber ant emerging on the right. (See pictures on the right for a closeup view of these features.) Some black sisal has been used to cover the mechanics, and a small amount of this has also been draped over the design to add a spooky effect!
