DESIGN 36

This design was made for a competition entitled "Anything Goes". The container is a tall oblong galvanized metal trough, with floral foam for the mechanics. It contains several unusual elements. Firstly, some silver painted stems of Corylus avellana 'Contorta' were laid horizontally across the with of the floral foam and anchored with mossing pegs. Two silver painted wicker "lanterns" give height on the right and side, and two silver painted Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus) seedheads give a strong visual texture, which is echoed in a third Lotus seedhead which has been attached to the front of the container with floral fix.

Three Arum italicum 'Marmorata' leaves flow down over the front of the container on the right. A curving line of pink roses runs from right to left across the design. Cream standard Carnations have been grouped to give a block of colour at the back of the design. This colour is echoed in the arching Calla lilies (Zantedeschia), and the arch of the Lilies has been repeated with Bear Grass (Xerophyllum tenax). A group of plain green Hedera leaves gives a contrast of form and colour towards the left hand side of the design. Towards the back-right of the design, three Asparagus shoots give a vertical accent. Because the container is shiny and has a large surface area, the Calla lilies have been arched over the front, and the flowing line has been extended with a further Lotus seedhead, and a sphere of Ivy (Hedera), which have been fixed to the surface with floral fix, to break up the surface. To echo the colour and metallic texture of the container, two metal pan scourers have been pulled into pendulum shapes, and pinned under the Arum leaves. (Well, "anything goes"!) A third scourer has been unravelled and pinned across the top of the floral foam to cover the mechanics and bring the colour and texture through the design. The foliage was from the garden, and the Zantedeschia was from the conservatory. The rest of the flowers were from the Florist.
