DESIGN 34

This design uses no floral foam, and all the plant material is supported by a sphere of Rubus cockburnianus stems, which was made by twisting and wiring the stems into shape. The base of the sphere sits neatly inside the container, and requires no fixing to keep it in position. The top two-thirds of the sphere is left on show to form part of the design (see closeup photo below). The container is a terracotta flower pot, inside which is another plastic flower pot which has had the drainage holes closed with hot melt glue so that it holds water. The Rubus stems support the plant material well, and it's quite easy to keep the flowers and foliage in position.

For the height I have used Contorted Hazel, Corylus avellana 'Contorta'. A group of purple Iris is on the right, and a group of pale peach/cream spray Carnations is in front of these, and this group winds its way through the Rubus stems towards the back of the design. At the front is a group of purple Lisianthus, and on the left is a group of orange Roses. Foliage used is clipped Fatsia japonica, Hedera 'Anne Marie', and Heuchera 'Stormy Seas'. The flowers were from the Florist, and all the foliage was from the garden.

A closeup showing the Rubus stems twisted to form an open sphere to support the flowers.
