This design features the contemporary technique of "veiling". This means that components are partially hidden by some kind of translucent material such as skeletonized leaves, sisal, angel hair, bullion wire, etc. Flowers should not be totally covered, but should be able to be seen through the veiling, introducing mystery into the design. Here, I've used a glass cake stand, with floral foam for the mechanics. I've arranged three sets of two Cordyline leaves around the outside of the design to make a triangular pattern. Foliage of Fatshedera lizei has been arranged in between the groups of Cordyline. This compact slightly domed design is made up of groups of pink roses, pale green 'Prado' Carnations, pale pink Gerberas, green spray Chrysanthemums, and silky seedheads of Clematis tangutica (not discernable in the picture). Some bright pink skeletonized leaves have been inserted at intervals to give a contrast of colour and texture. Finally, I've used some bright pink "Spirulina", a type of fine silky thread which is pulled from the packet, stretched and laid across the design to form the veiling. More Spirulina is used unstretched around the outer leaves of the design, where it forms hanging ringlets!
