This design is a traditional semi-crescent. A semi-crescent design should have one side longer than the other, whilst a crescent design has both sides of equal length. I've made this in a tall orange ceramic vase, with a plastic dish and floral foam inside the neck of the vase for the mechanics. As a lot of the plant material will be curving downwards, the floral foam must be about 3 - 4" above the rim of the container. When making this style of design, it's very important to choose curving plant material, as it's almost impossible to get the correct shape with straight materials. I began by defining the outline with curving twigs of Lime, and added Eucalyptus foliage and short pieces of Nandina domestica. I've strengthened the focal area with larger leaves of Hedera colchica 'Sulphur Heart', and Hedera helix. Next, I added 10 orange roses, using the larger ones in the central focal area, and following the curve of the design. Finally, I've added some blue Eryngiums for a change of colour and texture. |
