FLORAL DESIGNS

Design 255

This is an all-foliage design, which uses no flowers at all. In mid-summer, there is such a lot of beautiful foliage around that it is possible to make lovely designs just using foliage. There are a few things to remember when making all foliage designs:

  • Choose foliage which is in scale with your container.

  • Choose foliage with different colours - green, red/brown, yellow, grey, for example.

  • Choose foliage with different textures, both visual and actual - ferny, furry, shiny, dull, plain, variegated, etc.

  • Choose foliage with different shapes - broad, linear, round, oval, etc.

  • Don't use too much variegated foliage, as this will make the design too fussy and confused.

  • If possible, try to match your container with one of the colours of your foliage.

  • Here, I have used a yellow ceramic vase, with floral foam for the mechanics. For the height, I've used Phormium tenax purpurea (purple, linear), Hedera colchica 'Sulphur Heart' (variegated), Hedera helix 'Buttercup' (yellow), which has been grouped in the centre and wired together to form two rosettes for the focal area, and which picks out the colour of the container, Lonicera 'Baggeson's Gold' (yellow, linear), Heuchera 'Liquorice' (purple), Hosta (variegated green with a yellow edge), Mentha gentilis 'Variegata' (Ginger Mint) (yellow variegated), Cupressus (ferny, blue), Geranium palmatum (ferny, green flushed red), and Vinca minor 'Illumination' (trailer, yellow variegated). I've also added two sorts of grass seed heads - wheat, and Carex elata 'Aurea', both linear in form, to add texture and interest, and I've used some of the cut-off stalks from the Carex in a group to add extra interest and a change of form. NOTE: If you were making an all-foliage design for a competition, under NAFAS rules, you would not be allowed to use grass seed heads, as these are classed as flowers or fruit, not foliage. Grass foliage is acceptable though.
