This is a contemporary design using wire mesh. I've used a square galvanized container, and floral foam for the mechanics. In the centre, I've constructed a circular tower made from wire mesh - the sort used for animal cages! This sort of mesh is eaily obtained from an ironmonger or DIY store. I've cut the mesh to size using wire cutters, and joined it together with silver bullion wire. Inside the mesh I've used some lime-green sisal to cover the mechanics and pick up the colouring of some of the flowers used. The mesh has been pinned to the floral foam using wire mossing pins. Around the outside of the mesh, I've used some white Tulips and white Gerbera, inserting the base of the stem into the floral foam, and attaching the stems at an angle to the mesh with silver bullion wire. I've then attached some small plastic orchid tubes, covered in sisal and bound with silver bullion wire, each one containing one green Cymbidium orchid. Individual pieces of Bear Grass (Xerophyllum tenax) have also been threaded through the mesh to give another texture. At the base of the design, in opposite corners, I've used two rolled Laurel leaves, and two green 'Shamrock' Chrysanthemums. Finally, I've used some white sisal around the outside of the wire mesh to pick up the colour of the Tulips and Gerbera, and to cover the mechanics. |
The pictures above show (left) the 'Shamrock'Chrysanthemums and rolled Laurel leaves in the corner of the design, and (right) a closeup of the sisal-covered orchid tube. | |
