DESIGN 219

This is a vertical style design, which is a very slender triangle, and should not be more than two or three inches wider than the container. If this was to be made for a competition using NAFAS rules, then the arrangement should be no wider than the container. However, as this is just for the home, we don't need to worry too much about the width! I have used a tall square neutral-coloured pottery container, with floral foam for the mechanics. I've pinned some lime green sisal around the foam, to add accent and texture, and to hide the mechanics. I have established the height with three yellow Gladioli, then added seven yellow mini-Gerbera in a group on the right-hand side. The colour of these exactly matches the colour of the Gladioli! On the left, I've added a group of Ivy flowers for a change of form and texture, and there's a group of three small Hedera colchica "Sulphur Heart" leaves below these. On the right, I've used some plain green Hedera helix leaves, all grouped. Finally, at the front of the design, I've used three fruits of Asclepias physocarpa "Moby Dick" (common name Swan Plant), which have a wonderful form and texture, adding interest to the design. These naturally grow several to a stem, but here I've used them singly and wired them. (Note - When using Gladioli, pinch out the top few buds to prevent the tip of the stem from bending. It also means that all the buds will open eventually, which they don't always do if the tip is left on the flower.)

See design 124 and design 143 for other examples of vertical arrangements.
