DESIGN 168

This is an all-foliage design, which uses no flowers at all. In mid-summer, there is such a lot of beautiful foliage around, that it is possible to make lovely designs just using foliage. There are a few things to remember when making all foliage designs:

  • Choose foliage which is in scale with your container.

  • Choose foliage with different colours - green, red/brown, yellow, grey, for example.

  • Choose foliage with different textures, both visual and actual - ferny, furry, shiny, dull, plain, variegated, etc.

  • Choose foliage with different shapes - broad, linear, round, oval, etc.

  • Don't use too much variegated foliage, as this will make the design too fussy and confused.

  • If possible, try to match your container with one of the colours of your foliage.

  • Here, I have used a yellow ceramic vase, with floral foam for the mechanics. The foliages used are Hedera colchica 'Sulphur Heart' (variegated), Hedera helix 'Buttercup' (yellow), Rubus tricolor (shiny, green), Asparagus meyerii (ferny, green), Ilex variegata (variegated), Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea (purple), Phormium tenax purpurea (purple, linear), Xerophyllum tenax - Bear Grass (linear, green), looped to give added rhythm. Finally, I have added a couple of stems of contorted Hazel (Corylus avellana 'Contorta'), not strictly foliage, but it adds movement to the design!
