FLORAL DESIGNS

DESIGN 101

And now for something completely different! This is an arrangement which utilises different plant materials in tiers. I have used a square galvanized container, with one block of floral foam inserted upright into the container, and fixed with a large plastic frog (plastic pinholder with four prongs). I started at the base of the arrangement by adding some cream coloured sisal (the fibres from the plant Agave sisalana), which was wound around the foam and fixed into position. Next I added a tier of Ming Fern (Asparagus umbellatus). Then I inserted heads of white double Chrysanthemums, blocking them so that there was no foam showing between the flowers. Above these, I have added bundles of Equisetum hyemalis (Snake Grass) which has been cut to length and bound together with silver bullion wire. This was pinned to the foam with pearl-headed pins. Then I have added a tier of lime-green sisal, and this has been studded with pearl-headed pins for added security and decoration (see closeup picture below). Finally, the top of the foam has been covered with more white Chrysanthemums, slightly domed.
